Since 1999, the Alliance, in partnership with Statewide Legal Services of Connecticut, Inc. (SLS) has organized "Utility Day", which is a joint project of the Alliance, legal aid programs, social service agencies and utility companies. Members of the Alliance and SLS assist low-income clients in arranging payment schedules with utility companies to avoid termination of services prior to the end of the moratorium (a period that exists each winter when services cannot be terminated for nonpayment). Due to the overwhelming need for this service and the success of the program, the Alliance will continue to collaborate with SLS to plan future Utility Days and look for additional pro bono opportunities.
